Boulder has since upgraded the 1021’s software to allow it to connect to
a local network specific to a home audio system or to a home
network of the kind now common to anyone with a modern
Internet connect, and to use an Ethernet connection to decode
digital audio directly from a computer or a NAS media server.
As a result, a user can both play regular CDs or DVDs with
high-res material up to 192kHz or 32-bits, and play music files
at the same resolutions from a computer or external hard drive.
(The 1021 can play WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG Vorbis, ALAC,
and MP3 from its internal disc mechanism at native resolution
up to 32 bits or 192kHz.) Boulder notes that data are delivered
asynchronously and in packetized form, so there is no difference
between reading from a disc and streaming from a drive.
