Mehta's Mahler no.1 with some Israeli orchestra on Decca was my first Mahler LP. I thought it was good but haven't heard in 20 years. This version of no. 1 and no.3 are pretty good. The recorded sound of no.3 is fairly amazing. Those whacks on the timpani can really test your woofers....

Mahler Symphony no. 1 with Abbado and Chicago Symphony Orchestra


This is basically my introduction to Mahler. My college roommate played it in our dorm once. I was totally mesmerized by the music. 22 years later, Mahler is still one of my favorite composers.

All 10 symphonies in one box. This is the first complete version of Mahler Symphonies for me. I like this a lot. No.1, No.2, No.3, and No. 7 are some of my favorites.

Another complete collection of Mahler Symphonies by Riccardo Chailly with Concertgebou Orchestra. I like this collection a lot. Chailly stuck fairly accurate with the scores. I like the recorded sound, too. I like pretty much every interpretations in this set. However, no. 5 is clearly my favorite. Listen to the french horn in Mvt. 3. It was the most beautiful french horn I've ever heard.

Another complete set of Mahler symphonies. Gary Bertini and Kölner Rundfunkorchester.
To be honest, this set has almost no weakness. I like all of them. Every symphonies in this set are great. No. 8 and Das Lied von der Erde are by far the best version of these two works for me. The recorded sound is great too.

Mahler Symphony no.3 with Simon Rattle and CBSO

I have this one but I cannot recall anything special about this one. I may need to listen to this one again. It might be good.

Mahler Symphony no.5 with Lorin Maazel and VPO. I like this version a lot. It might not be the best version but I like the relax and poetic feeling offered by this version.

Mahler Symphony no.2 with Klemperer and PO.

One of my favorite versions. Haven't listened to it for a while, though. Klemperer was Mahler's assistant earlier in his carrier. Klemperer was probably one of my favorite conductors of all time. His Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, etc. are all special to me.

Another one by Klemperer. This one was recorded live. The interpretation was similar to the studio one. I like them both.

Other than Klemperer, Walter is another conductors that I love. His Brahms symphonies with Columbia Symphony Orchestra are my favorite version. He brought out the warmth that really comforts my soul even during the most desperate times.
