The audio industry being what it is, no-one has ever worked out the difference between an audiophile and an audio enthusiast… until now.
The Consumer Electronics Association (United States) recently conducted a survey which asked consumers how important to them was the quality of the audio content of program material. More than 1,440 people participated in the on-line survey, which included such topics as Audio, Content, Mobile Electronics, and Portable Devices and measured such concepts as Awareness, Expenditures, Interest, Ownership and Purchase Intentions.
The results of the survey are contained in a report titled ‘Notions of Quality: Audio Expectations of Consumers.’
According to the CEA, participants in the survey were asked to rate themselves in one of three categories according to their music listening habits. The report reveals that 34 per cent of respondents classified themselves as ‘Audio Enthusiasts’, 34 per cent as having a ‘Moderate Interest’ and only 23 per cent as having a ‘Low Interest’.
One analyst who’s examined the CEA report in detail says that the people who classified themselves as Audio Enthusiasts were typically aged between 18 and 55 and the great majority (77 per cent) had an annual household income of less than $75,000. The analyst concluded that if the results were extrapolated to cover the entire population of the USA, it would mean a target audience of 80 million people who would classify themselves as ‘Audio Enthusiasts’. This conclusion is particularly significant because the study also showed that consumers who put themselves in this category say they would be prepared to pay more money for better quality content and better quality equipment with which to listen to that content.
The CEA’s study sits oddly with the view most high-end manufacturers have of their own market. According to most high-end manufacturers, the people who buy their equipment are typically male, more than 50-years old and have a household income of more than $100,000. That’s still a huge target market, but it’s a long way from the stats in theCEA report.
