除了公寓或是比較小的房子，一般美國的房子有客廳（living room）和family room。客廳是招待不熟的客人（坐幾分鐘就走的），所以很少擺電視。通常是幾張沙發椅（比較正式，坐起來也不特別舒服的）和幾張桌子。 Family room是家人休息娛樂的空間，這裡的家具就以舒服為主，當然電視和音響通常也在這裡。不是熟人，一般是進不到family room的。引用:
