National Geographic switches to Blu-ray

January 31 – National Geographic has officially switched sides in the format war.

Previously in the HD DVD camp, National Geographic has shifted towards the Blu-ray format as of today. Of course this isn’t surprising even in the slightest, seeing as National Geographic is distributed by Warner. Warner recently shocked the HD format world by switching to Blu-ray over HD DVD, sending shockwaves throughout the industry. The first National Geographic release on Blu-ray will be “Sharkwater”, which is expecting an April release.

Xbox 360 HD DVD在美國大降價，但台灣暫不跟進。 圖片／微軟提供藍光和HD DVD高畫質規格大戰勝負揭曉，HD DVD日漸勢微，美國華納兄弟娛樂公司（Warner Bros.Entertainment）宣布不再支持下一代的HD DVD格式，改為單獨發行藍光DVD之後，美國消費者也跟著選邊站，就連最持支持HD DVD的Xbox陣營昨天美國也宣布大幅調降，降幅近3成。
去年藍光和HD DVD還屬五五波之爭，SONY的PS3選擇藍光、微軟的Xbox則是HD DVD陣營，不過經過近一年的市場競爭，讓美國八大片商也適時的反應市場，以往選擇同時支持HD DVD和藍光的華納製片將在今年5月只發行藍光DVD，這讓HD DVD更是雪上加霜。
就連美國最大連鎖零售商Best Buy日前也選擇支持藍光，在全美通路店頭顯目位置主打藍光，並派員工向消費者解說購買藍光播放器的好處，可說是提前替藍光吹起勝利凱歌。
微軟針對HD DVD推出專用的Xbox360 HD DVD播放機，原本在美國售價為179.99美元昨天調降為129.99美元，約台幣4,150元，還加贈一部「金剛」（Peter Jackson's King Kong）高畫質影片，降幅近3成。 台灣微軟對美國調降之事僅稱已向美國總公司反應中，目前則採推出「Xbox 360 HD DVD鼠來寶」優惠方案，HD DVD播放器附加一部「神鬼認證：最後通牒」特價6,490元。

Wal-Mart to officially discontinue HD DVD sales by June

With HD DVD, things are just going from bad, to really bad, to worse, to car-crash-you-can't-stop-looking-at. You can file this one under that latter category, as Wal-Mart has officially announced its intentions to stop stocking HD DVD players and movies by June. According to reports, the retailer came to the decision after Netflix and Best Buy made announcements concerning their position in the HD format war. Susan Chronister of Wal-Mart wrote on the company's blog, "By June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard-def movies, DVD players, and up-convert players." Susan went on to deliver what we consider a total burn by adding, "if you bought the HD [DVD] player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard-def movies, and make space for a BD player." Look, we're not gonna say that this is it for HD DVD, but... uh, it doesn't look real great.

Wal-Mart Moving Exclusively Toward Blu-ray Format Movies and Players

Bentonville, Ark., Feb. 15, 2008 – Wal-Mart Stores, U.S. today announces that its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores will move forward this year with one hi-definition movie and hardware format: Blu-ray. The change will take place quickly over the next several months whereby the retailer will phase out HD DVD offerings and reorganize shelf space. By June, Wal-Mart stores, Sam’s Clubs, www.walmart.com and www.samsclub.com will offer only Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, as well as standard definition movies and DVD players, and up converts.

"We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases," said Gary Severson, senior vice president, Home Entertainment, Wal-Mart, U.S. "With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term. We anticipate enhancing our selection with continued great values in hi-definition Blu-ray products, so our customers can further enhance their entertainment experience at home."
Wal-Mart will continue to sell through remaining HD DVD product, but in less than 30 days customers will see a more predominant move toward Blu-ray in stores, clubs and online. As the nation’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart thoughtfully reviewed all areas and impact in making its decision, and is excited to move forward with one format and share its future plans with customers.

Amazon takes 50% off over 150 HD DVD discs

February 15 - Amazon has come up with another killer deal today.
They are offering over 150 big HD DVD releases at a very sizeable 50% off.Of course, given recent events and rumors, this might be as much of a clearance sale for Amazon as a final stand for HD DVD.

　当社は、これまでＨＤ ＤＶＤ規格に基づいたプレーヤー及びレコーダーのグローバルな事業を展開してまいりましたが、本年初頭の大幅な事業環境の変化に際し、今後の事業戦略を総合的に検討した結果、同事業を終息することを決定いたしました。

　ＨＤ ＤＶＤドライブ搭載の当社製ノートＰＣについては、今後の市場ニーズを踏まえて、ＰＣ事業全体の中での位置づけを検討してまいります。
　今後は、市場動向を見極めながら、当社が持つ半導体のＮＡＮＤ型フラッシュメモリや大容量で小型のＨＤＤ等のストレージ技術や、次世代ＣＰＵ、画像処理、ワイヤレス技術、暗号処理技術などを最大限に生かし、新たなデジタルコンバージェンス時代に適した次世代映像事業の中長期的な新戦略を再構築してまいります。
